Mike Mignola (creator of Hellboy) will be honored at the Parsons School of Design with the title of "2005 Parsons Modern Master of Illustration" on March 3rd.

The Illustration Department is pleased to present the first Parsons Modern Master of Illustration award to Mike Mignola, as he exemplifies the qualties we hope the award will come to stand for in the future. At a time when illustration is more present than ever in the culture at large, Mike Mignola is active across categories. His comic book, Hellboy, gives the mainstream a good name, having garnered a readership amongst comics fan boys, as well as within the alternative comics and illustration world. His elegant draftmanship and sophisticated color sense, combined with solid storytelling skills and his creation of a super-anti-hero for our time, make him one of the most interesting artists operating in the world of visual literature. He also managed the difficult feat of retaining an unprecedented degree of creative control over his work when Hellboy passed from the page to the screen, winning one of the toughest battles an artist faces in crossing from one medium to another. The final result passed two rigorous tests: it satisfied the loyalists in the comics audience and impressed the movie critics.
