Capable, inquisitive, passionate, whip-smart, courageous, generous, honorable—these words only scratch the surface in summing up Toren Smith. We worked together for many years and forged a genuine friendship. Though polar opposites politically (and despite his idolatry of Canadian rock band Rush), we somehow managed to enjoy each other's company, and I came to respect Toren as much as anyone I've known. Toren passed much too young, but he lived an incredibly full life, carved out by his own unrelenting drive to do it on his own terms and by his own high standards. His enormous contributions to manga and anime in North America can't be understated, but as great as were these accomplishments, they are just a fraction of the man. I miss him. Rest easy, pal.
