"What We're Most Excited about Seeing in Buffy Season 9"
by your friends at Buffyfest
Gearing up for a new season of Dark Horse's Buffy comics, quite frankly, what we're looking forward to most is getting back to the madness.
Fresh Scooby stories, eagerly awaiting the reveal of this season's Big Bad, new and beautiful Steve Morris covers—these things are all great, but they're not what's exciting us most. Not conducting exclusive interviews or finding out juicy tidbits at Comic-Con panels, not even Joss Whedon's purple prose on Whedonesque. Don't get us wrong; it's fun to do that stuff and we're grateful for getting to do it, but witnessing the crazy and obsessing over every written detail—that's what we live for. That's the community.
This is what often happens: A new Buffy issue comes out, we at Buffyfest read it, we discuss it, Bitsy usually reviews it. The reaction from our readers: "Oh they're wrong, they're so biased, they suck!" etc. Fans fight on other forums about each other's perception of things. Watching the hullabaloo surrounding, for instance, Buffy's sexcapades, whom Angel killed that day, or what underwear Spike is wearing…these things are actually fantastic. It's what makes it what it is. You may shake your head at the fury of arguing 'shippers. You may both love it and hate it. But no matter how you feel, it makes you think about something you'd never think about otherwise. In the end, we're in it because that's fun. And funny! Watching the people with the action figures doing their reenactment of the comics? Come on, that's frickin' hilarious.
This fiction, it's still not over. There are new narratives afoot and it's constantly on the defensive because the fans never get what they want, which is all kinds of entertaining. For us Buffyfest bloggers, it's sometimes a spectator sport, and we sometimes jump in. But when the issue is released and the reaction comes out, it's usually never what we thought it would be. Always a surprise.
The fandom: the good, the bad, and the community of it. That's why we're most excited for Buffy Season 9.
