Satoshi Kon himself said it, there on page 358 of OPUS, the manga by Kon that Dark Horse released last November—Kon’s Seraphim 266613336 Wings, which Dark Horse will release at the end of February, is unfinished, just like OPUS. With OPUS, the fact the manga is unfinished is actually worked into the plot of the manga itself (and also, I think, into the themes of the manga), and it would have thus been something of a spoiler to mention it beforehand. Seraphim is unfinished for a different set of reasons.
Of course, ultimately, the reason that both manga are unfinished is because Kon has passed away, but when a respected creator dies, it’s often the case that because there will be no more new works from that person, fans desire to see even their unfinished works. Kon was also working on another anime film when he died, to be entitled The Dreaming Machine; our forthcoming book The Art of Satoshi Kon (out in August) will feature his designs for the movie, which remains unfinished, although his good friend, producer Masao Maruyama, would like to see it completed eventually.

We hope that you will want to check out Seraphim, even though it is unfinished. Seraphim is the co-creation not only of Kon but of Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii, and I can’t think of another case where two such talented anime directors collaborated on a manga (I thought of using Kon’s “My bastard child” as a quote on the back of the manga ^_^). Seraphim contains two afterwords, one by the original Japanese editor of the manga, and one by the editor of the Dark Horse version, that explain the unique history behind Seraphim and the reasons why the manga is incomplete. It’s sort of a “commentary track” for the manga, so as to not just abandon the readers when you get to that last page of the story. We feel that even the unfinished works of Satoshi Kon are well worth releasing, and reading.
