Fiona Staples shares her process steps for the cover of the upcoming Criminal Macabre One-Shot: No Peace for Dead Men by Steve Niles.
1. Here are a few cover concepts that I sent off to Steve Niles and Scott Allie for this special one-shot. Steve had mentioned that he’d like to include the Nova, the villainous Salem, and lots of monsters on the cover, so all of these have the car front and center and the witch looming in the background. Both Steve and Scott liked sketch #3 best!
2. This is what my cover pencils look like—fairly crude! The line art all gets painted over in the end anyway. I start out by blocking in colors and shadows like this, to establish a simple palette.
3. The finished cover! I’ve painted over everything from stage 2, cleaning things up and tweaking colors. Steve made sure I remembered to get Cal's license plate, MNSTRMN, in there.
