Joe Kubert, one of the truly great figures in the history of the comics business, passed away yesterday, August 12th. But to limit any characterization of Joe just to his impact on the comics industry is to do him a great disservice, as he could better be described as a great man. While Joe was an artist, editor, teacher, and mentor to many, his family always came first. Amazingly, his career spanned over seven decades, as he completed his first job at the age of twelve!
I discovered Joe’s work on Hawkman and Sgt. Rock as a young boy and became a fan for life. It was only natural that we would pursue Joe here at Dark Horse. Our efforts were rewarded with the publication of the Eisner and Harvey award–winning Fax from Sarajevo, a graphic novel based on his friend Ervin Rustemagic’s efforts to escape the war in Bosnia with his family.
Joe was a pleasure to know and to work with. His immense talent is legendary, and his influence on the comics industry is unquestioned. While his work lives on for future generations, he leaves a void that can never be filled. We’ll miss you, Joe.
