Dark Horse Comics: What’s been the best part about working on the House of Night comics thus far?

Kent: There have been so many “best parts” about working on the House of Night comics thus far. One is working with P. C.—there’s no way to describe it. It’s a wonderfully unpredictable, one-of-a-kind experience. Another is learning a new art form. Creatively challenging my brain is always invigorating and keeps me young. The other best part is when you get to see what the artists have done with your script. Every e-mail with art pages attached is like opening an awesome Christmas present.

DHC: Has working on the comics opened up any new creative veins for your House of Night series?

P. C.: TOTALLY! Kent, Scott Allie, and I are brainstorming a future HoN series that is totally outside the novels. I would have never thought of the particular setting we’re considering if I didn’t have the fabulous graphic format to consider and all the new ideas this genre generates. (Sorry, can’t say more about it—it’s Top Secret right now!)

DHC: What do you hope House of Night fans will take away from the comic series that they might not get from the prose books?

Kent: Very simply, we hope the fans take away from the comic series their favorite characters come to life in art. It’s unbelievably thrilling for us, so we know it will be for the fans as well. It’s like the first time you saw your girlfriend naked. You could only imagine it prior to that experience.

DHC: What has been the most challenging part of the process as you worked on the House of Night comics?

Kent: The most challenging part of the process has been writing a story about these characters and their world that isn’t in the books, but absolutely has to fit into the existing timeline and make sense. The fans are well aware of where the characters are emotionally and what has taken place before and after the story we’re telling in the comics. So it has to make sense; we can’t just make up whatever we want and hope the fans don’t notice.

DHC: If you could work on your very own original comic, what would it be about?

Kent: If I could write my very own original comic, it would be about me. It would be about me moving to the Arctic, where insects don’t exist. None. Not one single f*%#ing insect. And I’d live happily ever after.

DHC: If you had a superpower, what would it be? (We always end with this one.)

Kent: If I had a superpower, it would be the power to quit smoking. Or the power to destroy every f%$@ing insect on the planet.

P. C.: My first answer was that I’d like to fly like my boyfriend Superman, but then I thought about drinking and flying and I don’t think the two go together well. So my well-considered response is that I’d like to be able to control the weather (like Storm!).
