Digital publishing news, New York Comic Con stories and much, much more in this week's column!

This past weekend, a little event called New York Comic Con went down. Dark Horse was in attendance with a slew of big comics announcements that led to an onslaught of links in need of DH blog dissemination. So, let's cut the commentary and get straight to the meaty bits!

I'm DH Publicity Coordinator Jim Gibbons and this week's column is a no-nonsense bulletpoint edition! Here we go…

"Dark Horse Comics Launches Industry-Changing Digital Comics Program"
  • Our biggest announcement at NYCC was for our new digital publishing plan. You can get all the technical info on the Dark Horse Bookshelf app and the Dark Horse Digital Store here.

  • Macworld talked with Dark Horse President and Publisher Mike Richardson about the new digital comic app.

  • To celebrate the announcement, we offered eight of our old apps free throughout the weekend. We extended that offer for 24 hours this morning! Go get yourself some free comics!

New York Comic Con
  • The DH:HD program over at USA Today, and sponsored by Toshiba, kicked off it's run of original content today. Go read Hellboy: The Whittier Legacy at USA Today's site! The full rundown of original content the program will feature is discussed over at ComicBookResources.com, where Shaun Manning chatted with DH Editor Scott Allie about the program.

  • Chris Hasting's popular webcomic The Adventure of Dr. McNinja is coming to Dark Horse! Comics Alliance has the skinny and a great interview with Mr. Hastings!

  • Danny McBride's upcoming film "Your Highness" is getting the comic prequel treatment. MTV Splash Page has a peak at the Sean Phillips' cover and more info on the book.

  • ComicBookResources.com chatted with Chris Golden about the newly-announced Baltimore: The Curse Bells. Also discussed in that interview is the fact that Baltimore will be part of Dark Horse's Free Comic Book Day flipbook in 2011. The other half of that flipbook will feature the return of Steve Niles' Criminal Macabre. Niles discussed the return, as well as Cal MacDonald's upcoming team-up with The Goon, over at CBR as well!

  • Dark Horse's Director of Licensing Asia Michael Gombos appeared on Anime News Network's podcast to discuss the upcoming and recently-announced Yasuhiro Nightow's Bloodline Battlefront and Kouta Hirano's Drifters coming to the US via DH, as well as Shinjuku Book 2: Azul, the sequel to mink and Yoshitaka Amano's hit Shinjuku. For a non-podcast rundown of the news, ANN also reported the news here.

Vampires
  • USA Today ran a great story about our upcoming movie tie-in comic Let Me In: Crossroads that also discussed the horror-centric "Dark Horse Does Vampires Right" online teaser campaign. It was definitely nice to see our little teaser campaign get some national news coverage, not to mention Crossroads getting some deserved attention. The article also featured this extremely complementary quote:
"From the dark shadows of Let Me In: Crossroads to the vicious brutality of Baltimore: The Plague Ships, Dark Horse Comics continues to be an industry leader in presenting smart and compelling horror content to readers."

  • Tor.com interviewed Dark Horse Editor and Buffy: The Vampire Slayer—Season 8 co-writer Scott Allie about the book's final arc.

  • Over at Comics Alliance, Esther Inglis-Arkell featured Buffy: The Vampire Slayer—Season 8 #5 on a list of the top ten comics she would remove from her longboxes if she had to get rid of her entire comics collection…
"It's probably one of the best issues of comics of all time, and I wouldn't have to take it out of one of my boxes, because it's never made it into one of them. I just have it out, all the time."

Mike Mignola
The brand new blog MTV Geek launched with an in-depth video interview with Mike Mignola in his studio. Any fan of Mignola's work should take the time to watch the 8-part interview!

Falling Skies
io9.com featured the first preview pages of our comic tie-in to the upcoming TNT show "Falling Skies." Go take a look at the exclusive first look here!

Scary Godmother
Amazon's Omnivoracious blog posted an amazing review of Jill Thompson's Scary Godmother. Here are a few choice quotes…
"Thompson's imagination runs at full speed, yet her illustrations give enough reason to pause, and the good news is that there are plenty of stories to peruse in between pumpkin carvings or apple bobbing."

"Jill Thompson takes care to craft these stories for all ages without losing any bite. She avoids obvious gags and heavy-handed messages in favor of intelligent characters and creatures full of heart and presence."
The book is out this week and there's no better way to prep for Trick-Or-Treating than to give it a read!

What a week o' news! Thanks for taking the time to peruse these links, ladies and gents! Next week, we'll do the same thing but with more flavor and less bulletpoints. Till then! —Jim Gibbons
