Green River Killer
Last week, Dark Horse published Green River Killer, a phenomenal graphic novel written by the son of the lead detective on the case. For those of you unaware of this infamous serial killer: Throughout the 1980s, the highest priority of Seattle-area police was the apprehension of the Green River Killer, the man responsible for the murders of dozens of women. In 1990, with the body count numbering at least forty-eight, the case was put in the hands of a single detective, Tom Jensen.
This book is chilling. Expect lots of people to be talking about this book in the coming weeks. But first check out an extended preview on Comics Alliance.
REVIEWS, QUOTES and NOTABLES
Joss Whedon
Buffy Season 9 #1 has some advance praise at MTV Geek:
"Here’s the takeaway: as a Buffy fan, I’ve been burned before, perhaps too many times. However, this is a good, fun, solid issue that leaves me hankering for the next one in a way I haven’t felt since way back at the beginning of Season 8. Will Season 9 keep up the quality, the heart, and the funny for the rest of the run? I can’t say for sure, but I can tell you this: in this issue at least, Buffy is back, and better than ever!"
Angel & Faith #1 got reviewed proper by Comic Book Resources:
"…this is a hell of a start to a new series. With an incredible creative team in place and Whedon’s rich universe to play in, this issue is a slam-dunk."
Angel & Faith #1 also got some celebrity mention from Eliza Dushku on Facebook and Twitter, all because she read the review on Horror Haven Reviews:
"If, after waiting this long, you have yet to buy and read Angel & Faith, you are a complete moron. What are you waiting for? Go and pick up this book, you moron."
Eric Powell
Goon #35 is standing strong with Broken Frontier:
"There aren’t enough creators working in the medium today who have the courage to let it all hang out like Dorkin and Powell. They make us cringe sometimes but only because they make us laugh so hard at things we shouldn’t rightly be laughing at...Delightfully zany and deliberately sick in the best possible way, The Goon #35 tickles the funny-bone while satisfying that craving for something completely different."
Chimichanga is getting awesome reviews everywhere, such as Examiner:
"If you approach this tale of the down and out circus troop and their battle with a wicked witch and an even MORE villainous pharmaceutical CEO as some kind of statement about society, with a deep internal meaning that will have you grasping at new understanding emerging from the pages your eye has just cast over, you will not only be disappointed, but may see the whole thing as so two dimensional as to be insulting to your intelligence. If you instead opt to look at Chimichanga as a Mad Magazine like lark, where everyone is painted with a very wide brush, you’ll discover the story is just plain ole fun."
and Chimichanga on Robot 6:
"Chimichanga is a great kids’ tale about looking at and around differences, and it’s also a ripping adventure (sorry, couldn’t resist). At the same time, between Powell’s solid art and his witty writing, including a lot of allusions clearly intended at older readers, there’s a lot here for adults to enjoy as well."
KULT
Brand spanking' new and awesome site Comic Bastards gave praise:
"I actually like this book a lot and that surprised me. I was expecting it to be full of ugly ass demons and it wasn’t, but that steered it into a different direction than I was expecting which was a good thing. If the story continues this fine balance of humans and demons without treading too deep in one or the other it could turn out to be another decent mini-series that 2011 and Dark Horse has produced."
As well as praise from Comic Booked:
"Kult is a fusion of familiar concepts with a modern twist swirled together to do justice to the original role-playing game. So, if you were a solid Kult fan, or just suspect you might like the taste of a D&D, Matrix, and Akira cocktail, I highly recommend letting Dark Horse pour you a glass. I enjoyed mine."
Drifters & Criminal Macabre
Kitty's Pryde was a fan of Criminal Macabre: No Peace For Dead Men:
"This one-shot is a transition story. It takes Cal from where his life is now and sets him on the next chapter, which will start in Dark Horse Presents #4. That being said, it means this one-shot was not meant to be new reader friendly, but surprisingly Niles does a great job of making it so."
And Just About Comics got the first crack at Drifters Vol. 1:
Reading Drifters Vol.1 is my return to reading manga and it has me excited to read more of Hirano’s work as well as other manga in general. If a book can get me back interested in a whole genre of storytelling I think that’s one worth picking up if you haven’t already.
