It’s been way too long since we’ve had new Serenity stories coming out of Dark Horse. It’s not that we’ve been too busy (we’re always busy!) or not interested (we are!), but that we always thought that the graphic novel The Shepherd’s Tale would be the next chapter in the ongoing adventures of the Serenity crew (well, Shepherd Book, at least). In the midst of pulling together a fabulous creative team for that endeavor (holla, Zack Whedon and Chris Samnee!), Joss Whedon—esteemed creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Serenity, Dr. Horrible, Dollhouse, etc.—informed editor Scott Allie that Patton Oswalt—comedian, actor, and writer—had an idea for a Serenity comic. WHA HUH? Patton wants to write a Serenity comic?! That’s gotta be the coolest thing ever. My inner nerd goes wild!!! Then Patton shares his story idea; it’s about Wash—fan favorite and dearly departed. I could go on and on about how fun, and charming, and sincere Patton’s one-shot comic Float Out is, and then on and on about what a wonderful tribute it is, and how it’s got an ending that no one will see coming. (No one will see it coming. Really.) And how it’s the coolest surprise ending for all you die-hard Firefly/Serenity fans. But I won’t go on and on, because I want fans to find out these things for themselves; they won’t regret it.

Oh, and while we’re on the topic of Serenity, the month of June plays host to Can’t Stop the Serenity charity screenings across the country. Hosted by Browncoats (an informal organization whose name comes from Whedon’s Firefly), these events raise funds for Equality Now and local charities. Equality Now is a nonprofit organization that strives to end violence and discrimination against women throughout the world, and is a nonprofit near and dear to Joss Whedon. In Portland, Oregon (where I’m conveniently located), the event will take place on Saturday, June twenty-sixth, with screenings of the feature film Serenity and the Emmy Award–winning Internet sensation Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Throughout the month of June various Joss Whedon–related events will take place. Check out your own local Browncoats website for shenanigans in your area.
