February 07, 2006: Oh My Goddess Vol. 1 (Review)

After several years of publishing Keisuke Fijishima's manga Oh My Goddess, Dark Horse Comics recently decided to reissue the early issues in the series. Not only that, but they elected to make a change in their manga publishing strategy: after eleven years of distributing an Americanized version, Dark Horse will now release the title "unflipped." What does that mean? Well, it means that the book is read in traditional Japanase format - right to left, instead of left to right. To the uninitiated, this can be confusing at first (in part because even when you realize you should read the book from the "back" first, there is still a Westernized tendency to begin on the left side of the page and read across, as opposed to the reverse). The... [more]

January 19, 2006: Oh My Goddess! Vol. 1 (Review)

After making the transition to the smaller, unflipped format with vol. 21, Dark Horse goes back and starts re-releasing this popular series in the original format as well. Packaging: This volume uses the cover for the Oh! My Goddess Complete books that came out in Japan recently. The artwork is a bit deceiving, because it's a beautiful picture of Belldandy done up in Fujishima's latest style of drawing her. The blacks and rich hues of Belldandy's costume really make this cover stand out. The series logo in English is across the top and in the original Japanese on the left. The back has a smaller portrait of the earlier Belldandy and Keisuke. It's fun to flip the book back and forth and see how much Belldandy has changed since the series... [more]

Except they haven't. You see, after 11 years of distributing manga, Dark Horse has decided to follow the lead of other publishers and release OMG unflipped, or in right-to-left format. All future books in the series (starting with Volume 22 in December) will be unflipped, and in addition, Dark Horse will be re-releasing the earlier volumes of the series in original format, with one right-to-left volume coming out every two months. So this isn't the first OMG manga in America, but it's the first unflipped one. Got all that? Good. If you've never gotten... [more]

August 01, 2004: Oh My Goddess! Vol. 17 (Review)

Oh My Goddess, Vol. XVII: The Traveler Ever since the day that college student Keiichi tried to call for takeout food and instead reached the Relief Goddess Office, his life has been much stranger. Mild and beautiful goddess Belldandy entered his life, later followed by devilish elder sister Urd and the younger computer whiz, Skuld. This volume collects three stories. First, echoing The Bride of Frankenstein, little robot Banpei learns that bringing to life the women of your dreams is only the start of trouble. Then, when KeiichiÂ’s motorcycle club stores a dormÂ’s worth of stuff at this house, Skuld creates a space-expanding machine, but Keiichi and Belldandy end up trapped in infinite space. Finally, a Matthew Sweet song provides the... [more]
