December 19, 2017: NEON GENESIS EVANGELION: LEGEND OF THE PIKO PIKO MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS VOL. 2

The perfect hangout while waiting for that fourth movie! So...there's this brief conversational exchange between Misato and Shinji in the new volume of Neon Genesis Evangelion: Legend of the Piko Piko Middle School Students. It raises a point that perhaps should have been brought up way back in the original TV series: "Ritsuko Akagi is a very troubled person. As is Principal Ikari. As is Kaji. As am I. You'll see that this…this is the true nature of…a human being." "Yes, but, maybe adults could refrain from showing their true nature to kids? I mean, what's the benefit?"Neon Genesis Evangelion: Legend of the Piko Piko Middle School Students isn't really a spinoff manga. It is instead—dare I say it—a reboot, as... [more]

May 15, 2017: Manga Monday: Celebrate 20 Years of Evangelion Manga!

On the right is the very latest Neon Genesis Evangelion manga to be published in North America, Legend of the Piko Piko Middle School Students by Yukito and Yushi Kawata—now in direct market comic shops, and coming to your local bookstore later this month. On the left is the very first Neon Genesis Evangelion manga to be published in North America, the original one by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. I had the honor to be editor on both of them, and I’m proud to see how Evangelion has found an audience with a whole new generation. The two sides of this photo show the history not only of Evangelion manga in English, but the English-language manga industry—because the first thing you notice is that the title on the left, from 1997,... May 08, 2017: Manga Monday: Retweet to Win Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project Omnibus 1-3!

May is Manga Month at Dark Horse and we're celebrating with giveaways of our newest manga titles every Monday in May!    This week, we're celebrating the release of Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project Omnibus Book 3!  In Book Three, Shinji, Rei, and Asuka at last begin to train as a team for real combat, weapons in hand . . . stalking a giant gelatinous creature with a spherical “core” they must take out. If this kind of mission sounds strangely familiar, you’re right—but if things go as usual, it’s poor Shinji who’ll get called the slimeball!  We love the Shinji Ikari Raising Project and think you will to, so we want to give you a chance to win all three... January 16, 2017: Manga Monday: Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project Vol. 17

The fourth and final (?) Evangelion Rebuild movie is still somewhere on the horizon…but the longest-running Evangelion manga is in your stores right now, as Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project vol. 17 hits the stands!  Often, in manga, when a school puts on a play, it’s a shameless ploy to try to get the female and male leads to kiss. But of course, Shinji rarely even gets to show up on the cover of his own manga, so as you might expect, Class 2-A’s production of Romeo and Juliet is a shameless ploy to get Asuka and Rei to kiss.  Can rivals who aren’t exactly good friends put on a convincing performance as two of the greatest lovers in dramatic history? Or has their rivalry been... [more]

June 06, 2016: Manga Monday: Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project Vol. 16

The longest-running Evangelion manga returns with vol. 16 of The Shinji Ikari Raising Project, in stores this week! Even the original Neon Genesis Evangelion manga by series co-creator and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto only ran for 14 volumes, and as someone who’s been a fan of Evangelion since it first came out, I’m always intrigued to note the longevity of The Shinji Ikari Raising Project—especially as the series is inspired by a single scene in the original TV version of the anime’s final episode, where, as part of the Instrumentality (and, perhaps, as part of the meta-nature of that episode, which makes nods to the fact the show is a performance with a script and stage) the characters see a vision of... April 18, 2016: MANGA MONDAY: NEON GENESIS EVANGELION: CAMPUS APOCALYPSE OMNIBUS

Is Shinji even allowed to look as cool as he does in Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse…? Mingming, who wrote and drew the manga (the complete omnibus edition is already in comics shops, and will be in your book retailer by May) certainly thought so.  Maybe it’s got something to do with the fact Campus Apocalypse is a shojo manga. Shinji being a clumsy nice guy who stumbles around into the female cast—that won’t do. How about bringing back the cynical brooder from the original Evangelion, but giving him a little dash and flair? How about having his legal guardian be not the hot Misato—but the hot Kaji? And instead of getting into the effing robot, how about him fighting the Angels hand to... [more]

January 08, 2016: Dark Horse To Publish ''Shinji Ikari Raising Project'' In Omnibus Format

The most popular Evangelion spinoff ever! Following the major success of previous manga omnibus editions, Dark Horse will deliver a new collected format of Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari RaisingProject in summer 2016. The famous final episode of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime TV show imagined the show’s main characters in an alternate world where friendship and romance could be as important as their task to pilot the Evangelion. That premise forms the story line of Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project. Stunning, hotheaded Asuka Langley Soryu has been friends with Shinji Ikari since they were little. And she always sort of assumed they’d stay together—until the day the beautiful,... [more]

December 29, 2014: Manga Monday: In The Incredible Future Year 2015!

In the Northern Hemisphere, the New Year is a cold season. But when that new year is going to be A.D. 2015, nothing could fit more than: a.) a bowl of garlic pork ramen the size of a hot tub, and b.) Neon Genesis Evangelion. Only Dark Horse promises to bring you both, in this image from next May’s manga special, Tony Takezaki’s Neon Genesis Evangelion! That, of course, is only one of the new Japanese titles we’ll be releasing next year, a list that includes Drug & Drop, Seraphim 266613336 Wings, Oreimo: Kuroneko, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service vol. 14 (not a new series, but the first new Kurosagi volume in a while!), and The Art of Satoshi Kon. And just as we announced... [more]

December 15, 2014: Manga Monday: Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project Vol. 15

[please insert image Shinji Ikari 15.jpg here] In the most recent Neon Genesis Evangelion movie, Evangelion 3:0—You Can (Not) Redo, Rei Ayanami is a character who no longer seems so much a clone as a copy—I mean, a photocopy, the kind you get after you make one copy, then put it down on the glass to make a copy of that copy, and then repeat the process, copying each copy until what you started with hardly seems there any more. Rei was never exactly the type to whoop it up, but she used to be the iconic female character of Evangelion, a role that has been largely transferred to Asuka (the one with the eyepatch) and Mari (the one with the glasses). I apologize, by the way, for the spoiler about Rei being a clone, but that was... [more]

June 30, 2014: Manga Monday: Meet Creator Eiji Otsuka (And Dark Horse) At Anime Expo!

Dark Horse is about to head down to the largest Japanese fan convention in the Western Hemisphere, Anime Expo, this 4th of July weekend in Los Angeles. We’ll have a booth and panels, but what’s most exciting for us is that one of our Japanese creators, Eiji Otsuka, the writer of MPD Psycho and The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, will also be at Anime Expo! First, on Thursday, July 3 at 4:45 PM in Live Programming 4, you’ll want to check out the special guest lecture Mr. Otsuka is presenting at AX, “The Rebirth of the Saga and the Fabrication of History: Gundam, the Aum Cult, and Attack on Titan.” Those of you familiar with his manga know that Otsuka isn’t afraid to explore the provocative links... June 16, 2014: Manga Monday: Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project Volume 14 TPB

It seemed natural that a yankii would be into Asuka. I don’t mean a yanqui or a yankee—a fan from the U.S. of A. This fan was a yankii from Japan, a biker like Ichigo in Kamikaze Girls. Shock of bleached-blond hair, red satin jacket with a Rising Sun patch, black lipstick, stiletto boots, the whole nine. And she was purchasing a ¼ scale Asuka Langley Soryu figurine in Nakano Broadway, the legendary fan shopping mall in Tokyo, portrayed in The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service as “a five-story ant farm for otaku.”  Kurosagi’s creator Eiji Otsuka, who’s coming to Anime Expo this 4th of July weekend, no doubt knows Nakano Broadway better than I do, living in town and all. But as an otaku... [more]

March 31, 2014: Manga Mondays: Lone Wolf And Cub Omnibus Vol. 4 & Neon Genesis Evangelion

Few works of graphic fiction have portrayed action so powerfully, so elegantly, and so kinetically as has Lone Wolf and Cub. But what sets LW&C apart from other graphic fiction is the extreme contrasts within its pages. As a fan of great storytelling, I’ve come to realize that contrast is the high-octane fuel of drama. The studious intellect of the Judge in Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian magnifies the character’s savagery. The moment of sunlight and blue sky in the midst of The Perfect Storm renders the stricken sword boat’s plight absolutely crushing. The quiet passages in Nirvana’s "Smells Like Teen Spirit" turns the volume to eleven when the big chords come crashing down.  No one in comics... [more]

December 16, 2013: Manga Mondays: Neon Genesis Evangelion

MANGA MONDAYS: NEON GENESIS EVANGELION— THE SHINJI IKARI RAISING PROJECT VOL. 13     Moeeeeee—that's a common reaction to Rei Ayanami as depicted on the cover of Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project vol. 13, out in stores this week. And, as editor of both titles, I couldn't help but contrast it with that moment in Evangelion: Comic Tribute where one of the members of SEELE admits he finds exciting the idea of Rei "looking at me disdainfully with those cold, soulless eyes."   Now vol. 13 of The Shinji Ikari Raising Project came out in Japan in 2012, the same year as the most recent Evangelion movie, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. If you've seen 3.0 (if you haven't, it's coming to a... [more]

It's hard to get enough of a series as good as Neon Genesis Evangelion. Lucky for you, we've got a veritable well-spring of EVA knowledge on staff here at Dark Horse: manga editor Carl Horn! Here's Carl with his take on our two very different Eva manga. Neon Genesis Evangelion is famous for being, among other things, a gigantic multimedia licensing phenomenon, whose products include everything from the most humble thinpak DVD to a night in an Evangelion-themed hotel room with a view of Mt. Fuji (how much more Japanese can you get than that?). But look upon this pile, grown vast in space and time, and ponder: the very first thing you could ever buy from Evangelion was a manga, the original version of which premiered in the December...
