September 06, 2011: Making of a Cover: Criminal Macabre: No Peace for Dead Men by Fiona Staples

STEVE NILES’S GREATEST MONSTER MEETS ERIC POWELL’S GOON IN WHEN FREAKS COLLIDE AND FACES PERHAPS HIS GRAVEST THREAT IN NO PEACE FOR DEAD MEN. Cal McDonald’s drug-fueled bravado has entertained fans of horror comics and novels alike. His antics have made for some of the most entertaining blood-soaked noir either medium has ever seen. This year, he returns to comics in two exciting one-shots, each packed with vampires, werewolves, and every other kind of monster the world of supernatural fiction has to offer. May 04, 2011: Steve Nile's Criminal Macabre Comes to Dark Horse Presents!

In celebration of the triumphant return of our flagship title, Dark Horse Presents, we announce another classic comeback: comics’ favorite alcoholic supernatural detective, Cal McDonald! Following up on yesterday’s announcement of two omnibus collections of all of the previously published Criminal Macabre material, we announce that Cal McDonald will appear in issue #4 of Dark Horse Presents! While “Die Die My Darling” starts out as many of Cal’s recent adventures do--finding our “hero” at odds with his ghoulish sidekick, Mo’Lock--things are far from ordinary on this quiet night in Los Angeles. After a mysterious man unbuttons his coat and offers the duo a case, it becomes... [more]

May 03, 2011: Steve Niles's Criminal Macabre to be collected in Omnibus Editions!

Leading off a week of announcements related to the return of comics’ favorite supernatural detective, Dark Horse announces two volumes of Cal McDonald’s illustrated adventures. In 2003, Steve Niles, creator of the 30 Days of Night comics, launched a series of occult detective stories featuring the monstrously hard-boiled Cal McDonald. A pill-popping, alcoholic reprobate, Cal is the only line of defense between Los Angeles and a growing horde of zombies, vampires, possessed muscle cars, mad scientists, werewolves, and much more weirdness! “The first time Cal McDonald saw print was back in 1990,” said creator Steve Niles. “It took another thirteen years to launch what would become Criminal Macabre, and that...
