Volume 22 of Hideyuki Kikuchi and Yoshitaka Amano’s long-running series comprises a two-part story…originally published in Japan with a five-month gap between installments, which must have driven fans crazy. But you get them both in one volume, on sale this week! White Devil Mountain is the story of the profoundly evil and ancient Duke Gilzen, a vampire so monstrous that even other vampires oppose him. It makes for an unusual adventure for D, as he takes charge of a group of travelers tasked with locating and transporting the coffin containing Gilzen’s body. Familiar elements are there, of course; D finds himself joined on his quest by a wily assassin with a quick blade and a smart-aleck attitude, a kid...

Manga Mondays: At almost any anime con, you’re guaranteed to still see people cosplaying as Vash the Stampede, hero of Yasuhiro Nightow’s Trigun and Trigun Maximum series—whose legend will continue even though the final volume of his adventures is out this week! Trigun Maximum Omnibus Book Five is, of course, Vash’s showdown with his twin brother Knives over the fate of the planet—and if you only know how it played out in the Trigun anime, the confrontation is more developed in the manga. In addition to 530 pages of manga story, Trigun Maximum Omnibus Book Five contains over 60 bonus pieces of...

One of Dark Horse’s most popular releases in recent years has been Yoshitaka Amano’s The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy. We began with the limited-edition Boxed Set (unfortunately now sold out) and continued with the currently-available Slipcased Edition. There is one thing about both of these versions of The Sky, however—although they sold well, one cost $139.99, the other $89.99. Starting this week, Dark Horse is offering a third alternative, where you can get The Sky art books individually at a lower price, beginning with The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy Book One for $29.99! These are the exact same, high-quality, hardback, oversized art books that were in the Boxed Set and Slipcased Edition; but if you...

UNDER THE TRAVELER’S HAT: VAMPIRE HUNTER D So who is this vampire hunter known only by a single initial, and how in the world are there twenty volumes (and yet more to come) detailing his exploits? The best way to think about it is to consider D an iconic character, much like James Bond or Sherlock Holmes. He’s got certain consistent characteristics—the wide-brimmed traveler’s hat, the cyborg horse, the black cloak, the air of ethereal indifference, the fact his left hand is a separate, conscious entity with its own personality and a raging id—and of course, the fact that D is so staggeringly beautiful that everyone who sees him falls hopelessly in lust. Finally, D has a general modus operandi...

Deva Zan was no ordinary project for me as an editor. If I were to start from a personal level, I’m of the generation whose first exposure to Japanese pop culture was the anime Speed Racer. You might not associate Yoshitaka Amano’s ethereal style as an illustrator with the manic demon on wheels, but at age fifteen Amano was already working at Tatsunoko, Speed Racer’s studio, during the production of the show. So even if I didn’t know his name back then, I’m amazed to think that Amano-sensei has been there from the very beginning of my life as a fan. In the 1980s, I first experienced Amano’s dual nature as an illustrator of action and vision through the original anime version of Vampire Hunter D, as...

“Hea-a-a-a-vy!” as they used to say on the 1970s TV show Battle of the Planets, originally known as Gatchaman in Japan. But why do I say it? Well, first because it was (even if they didn’t know it) the earliest exposure many American fans had to the work of Yoshitaka Amano, at the time a designer at Tatsunoko, the anime studio that made Gatchaman. And second, because our new release from Yoshitaka Amano, The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy, is heavy, man! It weighs 12.6 pounds, to be exact. I know because I lugged it in my checked baggage to Anime Weekend Atlanta this last weekend, just to give fans at the Dark Horse panel a chance to have a sneak peek at it before it goes on sale October...

Dark Horse has a longtime connection to the internationally respected artist of Final Fantasy and Vampire Hunter D, Yoshitaka Amano. Although Amano-sensei has brought many works to life with his depictions, he has never before both written and illustrated a novel—until now! Deva Zan is not an adaptation of a book previously published in Japan, but an original work being published for the first time through Dark Horse—a lavish, oversize (9" by 12") fantasy epic containing over 240 original paintings by Amano done especially for the story. In Deva Zan, Amano wishes to give his own personal interpretation of Asian legends for a Western readership. The story centers around the twelve divine generals who...

It's often said around the Dark Horse offices that we've got the best fans in the business, and Day Four of Comic Con 2010 drove that point home. From the time the doors opened a steady stream of eager fans flooded into the Dark Horse booth to meet their favorite creators, buy armloads of books, and create a small, yet well mannered, riot. Check out the pics below for a full casualty report: Writer/Director mink and legendary artist Yoshitaka Amano signing for their new book Shinjuku. Avatar the Last Airbender creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Brian Konietzko had a line around the booth waiting to meet them.
